School-Based Occupational Therapy (OT)
What is OT and what will it do for my child?
School-based occupational therapy is designed to enhance the student's ability to fully access and be successful in the learning environment. OT's evaluate the child to determine what might be interfering with the child's ability to perform a classroom task.Areas evaluated by occupational therapy include:
Gross Motor Skills
Fine Motor Skills
Perceptual/Visual Motor Skills
Sensory Skills
Self Care Skills
Limitations in these areas only qualify a student for OT if they impact performance in school tasks.
Common areas impacted include:
Written Communication
Coloring or cutting
Organization
Desk Management
Following Directions
Reading
Written organization
Homework
Lunch
Gym
Recess
Toileting
Through practice of common classroom tasks focused on maximizing learning of the skill limitations the child develops self confidence and skill in previously challenging tasks!
